Saint Martin / Sint Maarten

SXM

Saint Martin in French and Sint Maarten in Dutch is an island located at the northern tip of the Leeward Islands chain in the north-eastern Caribbean.

Covering an area of 87 square kilometres (34 square miles), Saint Martin, along with Hispaniola, is unique in being divided between two nations.

The northern part, Saint Martin, which occupies about 60% of the island, is an Overseas Collectivity (COM) of France.

The southern part, Sint Maarten, occupying the remaining 40% of the island, is one of the four countries that form the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Although Sint Maarten has its own parliament and enjoys a certain degree of autonomy from the Dutch central government, it remains dependent on the Netherlands for matters such as foreign policy and defence.

On both the French and Dutch sides, English is the main language, with Spanish also widely spoken.

The Euro is mainly used on the French side, while the US Dollar is more common on the Dutch side.
